First World problems vs. Third World problems

March 29, 2014 § Leave a comment

It’s the middle of the night and you have a hankering for cupcakes? Not a problem: head straight to the “Cupcake ATM“. One opened in New York this week, and apparently it’s already been a significant business in the U.S., attracting private equity investment.

Skip across the globe to India, and in the same week a first-of-its-kind Water ATM opened in Mumbai. Unlike the cupcake business, this one does not seem to have any business case; it is essentially two non-profit organisations doing what is one of the basic duties of the local government.

It gets more pathetic/hilarious few days after the Water ATM opens. The municipal corporation of the city says that the “ATM” does not have necessary permissions to vend water!
